Take Our Kids to Work Day is a national annual event that welcomes grade 9 students into workplaces to explore career opportunities available to them.
The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services System (NWT HSS System) has proudly participated in this event for several years, hosting virtual sessions for grade 9 students across the territory as well as in-person events in the Yellowknife, Hay River, and Inuvik regions.
On November 4, 2026, the NWT HSS System hosted a variety of opportunities for Grade 9 students:
- Virtual half-day event for any interested NWT students
- Virtual half-day event for teachers participating with their classes
- In-person full-day events in Yellowknife and Hay River for students in those areas (limited capacity)
During the Yellowknife event, students enjoyed career presentations, toured the hospital, learned CPR, and participated in job shadow experiences across 10 different practice areas.
In Hay River, students spent the day exploring 9 hospital departments, learning about careers in health and social services, and taking part in lively, hands-on activities.
Our virtual event connected grade 9 students and classrooms from across the Northwest Territories with health and social services professionals, including a Registered Nurse in Hay River, a Social Worker in Fort Smith, a Combined Laboratory and X-ray Technologist in Fort Smith. They also learned about what its like to be a General Surgeon in Yellowknife.
Inuvik Regional Hospital will host its full-day, in-person event on November 13, 2026.
We extend our sincere thanks to the administrators, organizers, mentors, presenters, teachers, and students whose enthusiasm and support made these events a success.
If you have a student currently in grade 8 or teach a grade 9 class, save the date for next year's Take Our Kids to Work Day on November 3, 2027.
