Practicum and Student Placements
Practicum placements are a great way for students to acquire and practice the skills they will need for future job opportunities. Practicum placements allow students to gain actual experience working within the profession of health and social services while providing hands on training, mentorship and building connections for future employment prospects.
Completing a practicum placement within the NWT allows students a one-of-a-kind opportunity to work and develop skills in remote, community and acute care settings within the Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA), the Hay River Health and Social Services Authority (HRHSSA) and, the Tlicho Community Services Agency (TCSA), while providing healthcare services to the unique and diverse population these communities serve.
Practicum Placements are initiated as part of program requirements through an academic or technical institution, in which a student needs to complete a set number of hours to show competence to achieve a designation or graduate certificate.
The NWT HSS System has partnered with a number of academic and technical institutions through Practicum Placement Agreements, allowing students from all over Canada to experience what it is like to work, and live in the north. Check out the link for a complete listing of institutions with Practicum Placement Agreements. If your school is not listed, please email HSSPrograms@gov.nt.ca to see how your school can be added to the list.
For more information on setting up a Practicum Placement please review the Practicum Placement Guide, or email HSSPrograms@gov.nt.ca.
