Take Our Kids to Work Day is a national annual event that welcomes Grade 9 students into the workplace to learn career opportunities available to them.
The NWT HSS System has taken part in this event the last several years by hosting virtual events available to Grade 9 students across the territory and in person events in Yellowknife, Hay River, and Inuvik regions.
On November 6th, 2024, the NWT Health and Social Services System (NWT HSS System) offered events for students in Grade 9 across the Northwest Territories. Opportunities included:
- Virtual, half-day event for any interested NWT students.
- Virtual, half-day event for teachers interested in participating with their class.
- In-person, full-day events in Yellowknife or Hay River for students in the area (limited capacity).
During our in-person events students heard from presenters, toured the hospital, and went on 30-minute job shadows in eleven different practice areas. In our virtual event, Grade 9 classrooms across the NWT listened to presentations from nurses, social workers, oral health professional, and a family medicine resident.
We would like to express our thanks the hospital administration, organizers, mentors, presenters, teachers, and participants for the success of our in-person and virtual events! Thank You!
If you have a grade nine student, or teach a Grade 9 class, save the date for next year's event on Nov. 5, 2025. We look forward to introducing new Grade 9’s to as many healthcare careers as possible.
In the meantime, check out the NWT Health and Social Services System Occupation Guide to find out more about careers in the health and social services professions in the Northwest Territories. This is a great tool that could help you plan your future career!
